Follett builds nothing but soft, chewable Chewblet ice: Horizon Elite and Maestro Plus heads that sit on a bin or feed a dispenser, an undercounter nugget unit, and Symphony Plus and Champion ice and water dispensers for offices, clinics and hotels. Every one of them makes ice the same way, with an auger turning inside a cylinder, so a Follett visit is about that auger, its water level probes and the tube the ice travels through rather than about a harvest plate. We service Horizon Elite heads (self-contained, water-cooled and remote), Maestro Plus heads, the undercounter nugget ice machine, and Symphony Plus and Champion ice and water dispensers. Newer Maestro Plus and Horizon Elite 1014 and 1414 models run on R290, a flammable refrigerant that changes how the sealed system is worked on. ### Ice that is squeezed, not frozen in a sheet An auger scrapes ice off the inside of a round evaporator and presses it through a nozzle that forces the water out, which is what makes a Chewblet. Because the process never stops for a harvest, the gearmotor carries the load all day, and the control board watches its current draw closely. ### Ice can travel through a tube Follett's RIDE layout pushes ice through a transport tube to a bin or dispenser that can sit away from the machine. The bin-full switch reads the tube's position, so a kinked tube or one that has slipped out of its coupling can stop production with plenty of room left in the bin. ### The water must carry some minerals The level probes find water by its conductivity, and Follett asks for at least 10 ppm of dissolved solids. Water from an aggressive reverse-osmosis system can read as no water at all, so a low-water light on a site with RO filtration sends us to the water before the valve. ### Its own cleaner, and never bleach Follett's manuals call for its SafeCLEAN Plus solution twice a year on the evaporator and forbid bleach. We follow that procedure, including the sponge that is pushed through the ice transport tube, instead of a generic cleaner. Parts Follett runs its own online parts store, and its manuals list gearmotors, augers, water probe assemblies and boards by part number for each serial range. We read the serial number first, because several Horizon Elite manuals split at a serial number and the parts change with them. Repair or replace Auger, bearing, gearmotor, water probe and valve work is routine on a Follett and nearly always worth doing. A compressor or sealed-system failure on an older head that also has a worn auger and evaporator is the case where replacing the head is worth weighing. The level probes detect water through its minerals, and Follett needs at least 10 ppm of dissolved solids for them to work. Very pure water from a reverse-osmosis system, scale on the probes or a valve that no longer opens can all light LO WATER with the supply open. ### Can I sanitize a Follett ice machine with bleach? No. Follett's manuals forbid bleach and call for its own SafeCLEAN Plus solution, used on the evaporator every six months, along with sponges pushed through the ice transport tube. ### My Follett stopped with a half-empty bin. What stops it? The bin-full switch reads the position of the ice transport tube. Ice jammed in a badly routed tube, a stuck shuttle or a tube backed out of its coupling makes the machine believe the bin is full, and it sits in TIME DELAY. ### Does it matter that my Follett runs on R290? It matters for the repair, not for daily use. R290 is propane, so any sealed-system work needs a gas leak detector and a well-ventilated area, and a hiss or gas smell near the machine is a reason to leave the room and book a visit. --- **[Read on the site: Follett Ice Machine Repair | IceMachineRepair.center](https://icemachinerepair.center/brands/follett/)** **[Book a visit with IceMachineRepair.center](https://icemachinerepair.center/schedule/)**
