# Ice machine checks before booking: power, supply valve, curtain, airflow and the bin

These ice machine checks before booking stay outside the cabinet: power and the breaker, the water supply valve and filter, the water curtain, air around the condenser, the bin level and the drain. If a breaker trips twice, water reaches a walkway, or anyone smells burning or gas, the checks are over and the machine waits for a technician.

## At a glance.

Commercial ice machines stop themselves for ordinary reasons: the water went off during a plumbing job, a cube wedged the curtain open, the bin is simply full. Ten minutes at the front of the cabinet sorts those out and leaves a clear record for the visit if one is still needed.

Read the whole guide

### Time needed About ten minutes, plus a cycle

Then leave the machine through one full freeze and harvest before judging the result.

### Tools Flashlight, towel, phone camera

No screwdriver: every check is made with the panels on.

### Most common find Water off or ice holding the curtain open

Both stop the machine without anything being broken.

### When to quit checking Second breaker trip, water underfoot, burning or gas smell

Move away from the machine and book; for a strong gas smell, call 911.

## Why a stopped ice machine is often not a broken one

An ice machine's control watches its water, its curtain or bin sensor, its cycle times and its temperatures, and it shuts down to protect itself when one of them reads wrong. From across the room, a protective stop and a real breakdown look the same: no new ice and a quiet cabinet.

The ice machine checks before booking below follow the order the machine itself needs things: power, water, a closed curtain, air to cool the condenser, room in the bin and a drain that carries water away. Work down them one by one, and as soon as something turns up, fix that one item and give the machine a full cycle before moving on.

## The display, the power button and the breaker

Check that the display or the power light is on and that the machine is actually switched on, not just powered. Manitowoc's checklist includes an ice machine that was never turned back on after cleaning, and asks that the display read Making Ice. On a remote or split system, the condensing unit outside the room has its own supply.

Manitowoc also warns that the power switch does not disconnect all incoming power. The switch is for starting and stopping ice making; the disconnect or the breaker is the only thing that makes the cabinet safe, and nothing in this guide needs the cabinet open.

### A tripped breaker

A breaker that has tripped gets one reset, and only with your feet on dry tile. A second trip is the answer in itself: something inside is drawing current it should not, perhaps a compressor, a fan motor or a damaged wire, and the breaker stays off until a technician has looked.

### Settings that stop production

Energy-saving schedules and other entered settings can stop a machine on purpose. Manitowoc lists this in its checklist and says to reset to factory defaults. If someone changed a setting recently, note what it was before resetting anything.

## Water supply, filter and the water curtain

Water problems stop more machines than any part. Scotsman's modular cubers restart by themselves within 25 minutes of water returning, which is why a machine can seem to recover on its own after a plumber leaves. Its water-cooled models may need a manual reset once the condenser water is back on.

The water curtain is the hinged panel in front of the evaporator. During harvest the sheet of ice pushes it open and a switch tells the control the ice has dropped. If a cube or cluster wedges it open, the machine waits: Scotsman says to remove the stuck ice and the machine should restart in a few minutes.

- Shutoff valve on the ice machine's supply fully open.
- Filter cartridge not overdue, and its housing not leaking.
- Water in the trough during a freeze, visible through the front on many models.
- Curtain hanging freely and closed, with no ice stuck underneath it.
- Water not running into the trough with the machine switched off.

## Air, the bin and the drain

A machine that is hot to the touch, in a room that has become hotter, may be stopping on its high pressure protection. Manitowoc's first answer for that is cleaning the condenser coil, and its washable air filter should be washed monthly once the disconnect is off. Clear anything stacked against the intake or the exhaust.

A full bin stops production on purpose. Scoop ice toward the front and back to level it, and check that the bin sensor or thermostat is not simply covered by a mound. On a residential undercounter unit Scotsman suggests checking for a restricted drain or standing water in the bin when capacity drops.

### Following the drain path

Look under and behind the bin for water where it should not be. A drain that backs up into the bin, a pump that runs without clearing, or a puddle spreading from under the machine toward a floor outlet is not something to mop and ignore. Shut the supply valve, put a wet-floor sign out, and book.

## What to write down before the visit

Parts are what make a second trip necessary, and the right ones come on the first trip when the booking already names the model, the signal on the panel and the events that led up to the stop. Photograph the display and the dataplate and keep the notes with the machine's paperwork.

- Head model and serial, read off the dataplate or the information screen.
- Any light or code showing, with a photo taken before resetting.
- Whether the machine restarts after a power cycle, and how long it runs before stopping again.
- What changed recently: a filter, plumbing work, a move, a hotter room, a new setting.
- Date of the last cleaning and sanitizing, plus the products used.

## Where to stop

End the checks the moment the breaker goes a second time, water creeps toward an outlet or across the walkway, or the air carries burning plastic. A hiss or gas odor beside an R-290 unit means no switches and no flame: prop the doors, clear the room and dial 911 if the odor is strong. Live panels and refrigerant lines are off limits throughout.

## Step by step.

Five steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Confirm power

Check the display, press the power button once, and reset a tripped breaker only once from a dry floor.

02

### Confirm water

Open the supply valve fully, check the filter date, and wait up to half an hour for an automatic restart.

03

### Free the curtain

Remove any ice holding the water curtain open and let it swing closed.

04

### Clear air and bin

Move anything off the intake and exhaust, level the ice in the bin, and look for standing water.

05

### Record and book

Photograph the display and dataplate, note what changed, and book if it stops again.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### How long should I wait after restoring water?

Give it half an hour. Scotsman's modular cubers restart by themselves within 25 minutes of water returning, and other makers check for water on a similar timer.

### Is pulling the plug a good way to reset it?

Use the power button or the maker's reset first. Scotsman's residential manual warns against cutting power without also shutting off the water supply, and a plug behind a bin is rarely safe to reach.

### The machine restarts and then stops again. What now?

That repeating pattern is the machine protecting itself. Note how long it ran and any light or code, then book rather than resetting it over and over.

### Can I clean the condenser coil myself?

The washable air filter, yes, with power off at the disconnect. The coil behind it can be checked with a flashlight; if the maker's method does not clear it, a technician should.

## When it needs a technician.

The repairs on the right are where this guide ends when the checks do not settle it.

### Ice machine diagnostic visit

A visit that watches a freeze and a harvest, checks water, drain and condenser, reads stored codes, and names the part holding the ice back.

### Ice machine bin control repair

The thermostat bulb, paddle, curtain switch or electronic eye that senses a full bin, adjusted or replaced so the machine stops and restarts on time.

### Ice machine drain and pump repair

Gravity drains, air gaps, drain pumps and their lines, cleared or replaced when meltwater backs up into the bin or reaches the floor.

### Ice machine control board repair

The controller, its display, the sensors it reads and their wiring, tested when a code, a blinking light or a dead machine points there.

## More in troubleshooting.

The checks an ice machine owner or manager can make safely, from the switch and the water supply valve to the air filter, the bin, the drain and the data plate, and exactly where to stop and book.

Safe checks at the bin and the valve

### Reading ice machine lights and codes: status, requests and protective stops

A yellow light is often a timer, a blinking red one a request for water, and a safety limit a stop worth one restart. How to tell which before pressing anything.

Safe checks at the bin and the valve

### Finding the ice machine model and serial number on the head, the bin and the screen

A modular setup has two or three plates. Where each one sits, what the model string says about cube size and refrigerant, and what to do when the plate has faded.
