Upper East Side restaurants and doorman buildings keep ice machines in small back rooms and basements, and a machine whose air-cooled condenser shares a closet with other equipment is often short of air in a summer heat wave. ## What Upper East Side does to an ice machine. City landmark status covers large parts of the neighborhood, from Carnegie Hill, protected since 1974 and enlarged in 1993, to the Park Avenue district added in 2014. Con Edison supplies the neighborhood's electricity and also runs the country's largest district steam system, which serves about 1,555 customers in Manhattan. The warmest month on the books at Central Park, along the neighborhood's western edge, is July 1999, which averaged 81.4°F. Restaurants here must post the letter grade from their city sanitary inspection where people passing by can easily see it, a rule in place since 2010. [All of New York Metro](https://icemachinerepair.center/locations/new-york/) ### Tower living Many newer ice machines charged with R-290 sit in small tower pantries and lounges, and a hiss or a gas smell there means no switches and no flame: open the door, leave the room and call 911 if the smell is strong. ### Small cafes and back bars Behind a narrow bar the undercounter ice machine is boxed in by coolers and a sink, and an air-cooled unit forced to breathe its own warm exhaust runs long cycles and drops thin cubes, so the clearance at its front grille is checked before the sealed system. ### Older housing stock Older wiring may put an ice machine's compressor on a circuit shared with other bar equipment, and a breaker that trips each time the harvest starts is left off and reported rather than reset again and again; at a burning smell, switch the breaker off. ## A visit in Upper East Side. In Upper East Side as anywhere, these four call for the ice machine to be shut down and left that way for our visit: water spreading from it or its drain across a walkway or toward an outlet, a burning or hot electrical smell, a breaker that trips when it starts, or a hiss or gas smell at a machine charged with flammable R-290.
