A brief whiff of scorched dust that is gone in minutes is a reason to book a condenser cleaning, not a rush. ## What it usually means. An ice machine carries a compressor that starts and stops dozens of times a day, one or more condenser fan motors, a water pump, an inlet valve coil, a hot gas valve and a control board, all in a cabinet that sits in the warmest, dampest corner of a bar or kitchen. Heat and moisture are hard on wiring. A condenser caked with grease and lint runs the compressor hot for hours, a fan motor with dry bearings overheats before it seizes, and a loose terminal on the compressor or at the plug arcs every time the machine starts. Some smells are harmless: dust burning off a fan the first warm day of the year, or a new machine's first hours. A smell that sharpens, returns with every start, or comes with a buzz, a click from the compressor that repeats, a warm plug or discolored socket is an electrical failure in progress, and it only gets worse if the machine keeps cycling.
