An ice machine has a few normal sounds: the compressor humming, a fan whirring, water splashing, the inlet valve hissing as it fills, and the drop of a slab or a batch of nuggets into the bin. A machine that is suddenly louder has usually changed in one of a few ways. A fan motor losing its bearings grinds or squeals, and a blade that has picked up grease or hits a loose bracket ticks. A water pump with scale or a worn bearing rattles or whines. The slab can bang harder when scale makes it cling and then release all at once. A nugget machine's auger and gearmotor grind when the auger is scaled or the bearing is worn. Panels and legs loosen with vibration, and a machine that is not level rocks.
