# Ice Machine Tripping the Breaker or Blowing a Fuse

An ice machine tripping breaker problem can look like a bar that goes quiet at the start of every freeze, a GFCI outlet behind the bin that snaps off after a cleaning, or a fuse that goes on the hottest afternoons of the year.

## Gas smell? Everyone out, no switches. No gas: close the water, breaker off at a dry panel

A breaker that trips once and holds after one reset can wait for a normal booking. A trip that repeats, a GFCI that will not stay set, or any trip with water or a hot smell means the power stays off until a technician has looked.

## What it usually means.

The breaker and any GFCI outlet on the ice machine's circuit are there to cut power when current goes somewhere it should not. The biggest demand comes when the compressor starts, which on a busy machine happens many times a day. A compressor that struggles to start because its start parts are worn, or because a clogged condenser has left it hot and the pressures high, draws more than the breaker allows. Water is the other common cause: cleaning solution splashed into the control box, condensation dripping onto a terminal, a drain pump that overflowed around its own wiring. A GFCI outlet trips on a very small leak of current to ground, so moisture that a standard breaker would ignore will trip it. Sharing a circuit with a blender station, a glass washer or a heater can also put the total over the limit. Resetting a breaker once can be reasonable; resetting it again and again forces current through whatever is failing. A trip together with a burning smell or water near the outlet is handled on those pages first.

The 6 causes, cheapest first

Answer these first

01

Does the breaker or GFCI trip at the moment the compressor starts, during a harvest, during cleaning, or at random?

02

Is it a breaker at the panel, a GFCI outlet behind the machine, or a fuse?

03

Does anything else run on the same circuit, such as a blender, a glass washer or a heater?

04

Was the machine cleaned, moved or splashed shortly before the trips began?

05

Is there water near the outlet or a smell of something hot?

## Check these before you book.

Ice machine tripping breaker: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

If there is water near the outlet or the panel, or a burning smell, leave the breaker off and go to that page first.

02

Reset the breaker or GFCI only once, from a dry spot, and note whether it trips again at the compressor start, at harvest, or later.

03

If it trips a second time, leave it off and do not keep resetting it.

### Also worth checking

- Unplug other appliances on the same circuit and see whether the trips stop.
- Note when the trips happen and photograph the data plate for the visit; leave the panels and the control box closed.

## The causes, cheapest first.

6 things ice machine tripping the breaker or blowing a fuse turns out to be, from another appliance sharing the circuit to a compressor with a shorted winding.

[The cost guide](https://icemachinerepair.center/cost/)

1. 01 no repair ### Another appliance sharing the circuit A blender station, a glass washer or a space heater on the same circuit can tip the total over the limit when the compressor starts. Moving the other appliance to its own circuit is the fix. No repair: check it yourself
2. 02 low ### Water in the control box or around a connection Cleaning solution splashed over the top of the unit, or condensation dripping onto a terminal, trips a GFCI outlet. The wet area is dried and sealed and the wiring checked before the machine goes back on. [Book a diagnostic visit](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/diagnostic-visit/)
3. 03 low to moderate ### A drain pump overflowing onto its own wiring A pump reservoir clogged with slime overflows around its motor and cord. Water on those terminals trips a GFCI outlet on the first harvest. [Fixed by ice machine drain and pump repair](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-drain-and-pump-repair/)
4. 04 low to moderate ### A fan motor or water pump shorting A condenser fan motor or water pump with a damaged winding pulls current to ground. The machine may run for minutes, then trip as the part warms. [Fixed by ice machine condenser and fan repair](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-condenser-and-fan-repair/)
5. 05 moderate ### Worn start parts or a compressor struggling to start A tired start relay or capacitor, or a compressor that is hot from a clogged condenser, draws a heavy current at every start. The start parts are tested and the condenser cleaned before the compressor is judged. [Fixed by ice machine compressor and sealed system repair](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-compressor-and-sealed-system-repair/)
6. 06 highest ### A compressor with a shorted winding When a winding shorts inside the sealed compressor the breaker trips instantly at every attempt to start. It is measured on site, and the repair is weighed against the machine's age. ## What else it could be.

Most often confused with burning or hot electrical smell from an ice machine, then ice machine leaking water across the floor or under the bin.

## Questions about ice machine tripping the breaker or blowing a fuse.

### Why does the breaker trip only when the ice machine starts a new freeze?

That is when the compressor starts and draws its biggest current. Worn start parts, a hot compressor or a shared circuit usually show up at that exact moment.

### The GFCI behind the ice bin trips after we clean it. What is going on?

Water or cleaning solution has most likely reached a connection. Leave it off, let it dry, and have the wiring and seals checked before it runs again.

### How many times can I reset the breaker for the ice machine?

Once. If it trips again, something is drawing too much current or leaking to ground, and each reset pushes more current through that part.

### Does an ice machine need its own circuit?

Most makers ask for a dedicated circuit of a stated size in the installation manual. A machine sharing one with a blender or a heater can trip it through no failure of its own.
