Start with what you own

# Ice machine types, told apart.

The same water can end up as four very different ice. A modular head freezes cubes over a bin or dispenser and sends its heat to a fan, a water line or a condenser on the roof, an undercounter machine does it all in one cabinet under the bar or the island, a nugget machine compresses flakes into soft pellets through an auger, and a dispenser pours ice and water on demand from a counter unit. Naming yours in the booking tells the technician what access, parts and cooling setup to expect.

## Four types, each its own job.

Each one is built, reached and repaired differently. Open yours for what fails on it and what the work involves.

### Modular ice machine

An ice-making head set on top of a separate storage bin or drink dispenser, cooled by air, water or a condenser on the roof, turning out hundreds of pounds of cubes a day.

### Undercounter ice machine

A self-contained ice machine that makes and stores its own ice under a bar, a service counter or a kitchen island, from commercial units to clear-ice models in large homes.

### Nugget ice machine

An ice machine that freezes a thin layer inside a chilled cylinder and pushes it out with an auger as soft, chewable nuggets, for clinics, offices, hotels and large homes.

### Ice and water dispenser

A countertop or floor-standing unit in a hotel hallway, an office or a clinic that makes and stores ice and hands it out with water at the touch of a lever, a button or a sensor.

Not sure which you have?

### Start from what it is doing

If the ice machine in your kitchen, bar or back room does not obviously match one of these, work from the symptom instead. It reaches the same answer from the other end.

## Which one is yours?

One look at the ice machine usually settles it. The first sign of each type is on the right; its page has the rest, and what that type means for a repair.

### Modular Modular ice machine

The part that makes ice is a separate box sitting on top of the bin or dispenser, with its own front panel above the bin door.

### Undercounter Undercounter ice machine

The whole ice machine fits under the counter, and the door on its front opens onto a bin of ice, with no separate head on top.

### Nugget Nugget ice machine

The ice comes out as small, soft, uneven pellets you can crunch, not as square or crescent cubes.

### Dispenser Ice and water dispenser

Nobody opens a bin: ice comes out of a spout when you press a button, push a lever with the cup or hold the cup under a sensor.

## What a repair usually costs.

Weigh the repair against what a new ice machine of the same kind would really cost you, delivered, set on its bin or into its opening, plumbed, drained and wired, not only its catalog price. A head sits on a bin that fits it, an undercounter unit fills an opening built for its size, and a remote-cooled machine has line sets and a roof condenser already in place, which tips most jobs toward repair. Cleaning, valves, probes, fan motors, drain parts and a bin control are small beside a new machine, and a board or a harvest part is usually still worth it. The real exception is a compressor or an evaporator on an old machine charged with a gas no longer made: there the technician lays both totals side by side and the choice is yours.

| Repair | Relative cost | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Full cleaning and sanitizing, condenser filter wash and a fresh water filter](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-cleaning-and-sanitizing/) | lowest | A scheduled cleaning of a head on a bin or an undercounter unit, with the curtain, tube and probe cleaned by hand, is the smallest job here. Heavy scale that needs a second pass, a large bin, or slime deep in the drain lines adds time to it. |
| [Inlet valve, sump float or level probe, supply line and filter head](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-water-valve-and-filter-repair/) | low to moderate | A cleaned inlet screen or a new filter cartridge sits at the bottom of the band. A new inlet valve, a level probe, or a supply line and filter head replaced together make up the fuller job. |
| [Thickness probe, curtain switch, harvest assist and hot gas valve](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-harvest-repair/) | low to moderate | Cleaning and setting the probe, or a new curtain switch, costs little beyond the visit. A harvest assist motor is a step up, and a hot gas valve whose body has to be replaced inside the sealed system sits at the top of the band. |
| [Compressor start parts, leak repair, evaporator or compressor replacement](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-compressor-and-sealed-system-repair/) | highest | A start relay, capacitor or overload is a small part at the low end. Finding and repairing a leak with a new charge, or replacing a compressor or an evaporator, is the dearest work on any ice machine, and an R-290 machine adds the time its safe handling calls for. |
| [Condenser cleaning, fan motor, water regulating valve or remote condenser work](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-condenser-and-fan-repair/) | low to moderate | A coil cleaning and a washed filter are near the bottom. A new fan motor or a water regulating valve is a step higher, and work on a remote condenser on the roof adds the time it takes to reach it. |
| [Control board, display, transformer, thermistors and harness](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-control-board-repair/) | moderate to highest | A loose or wet plug, a thermistor or a transformer that made the board look guilty is modest. A new control board with its display, set up for the model, is among the dearest parts in the machine, and some take time to arrive. |
| [Drain line clearing, air gap, drain pump, float and check valve](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-drain-and-pump-repair/) | low to moderate | Flushing and sanitizing a slimed drain line, or restoring its slope and air gap, is the lighter end. A new drain pump with its float and check valve, fitted behind an undercounter unit, sits a step higher. |
| [Bin thermostat, paddle, curtain switch or ice-level sensor](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-machine-bin-control-repair/) | low | Cleaning and adjusting the control is a short job, and a new thermostat or paddle switch is an inexpensive part. An electronic level sensor, or a control that has to be relocated after a head moved to a new bin, adds a little. |
| [Agitator motor, dispense wheel, chute gate, solenoid, lever switch or sensor](https://icemachinerepair.center/services/ice-dispenser-mechanism-repair/) | low to moderate | Freeing fused ice and clearing a sticky gate or a clogged tray drain costs little beyond the visit. A new agitator gear motor or a touchless sensor assembly, with the hopper cleaned and sanitized afterward, moves the job up a step. |

For the heart of your home.

## Questions about the types.

### Which ice machines does this site cover?

Modular ice machines with a head on a separate bin or dispenser, undercounter self-contained machines in bars and premium homes, nugget and chewable-ice machines, and ice and water dispensers on a counter. The ice maker inside a refrigerator and a small countertop unit you fill by hand belong to our sister ice maker site.

### Is a modular head repaired differently from an undercounter machine?

Mostly in how the technician gets at it. An undercounter unit often has to be eased out from under the bar with its water and drain lines disconnected, while a modular head is reached from the front and top, sometimes on a ladder over a tall bin, and a remote-cooled one adds a condenser on the roof. The water system, the harvest and the bin control work the same way in both.

### Do nugget ice machines have problems of their own?

Some. Instead of freezing a sheet of cubes on a plate, a nugget machine freezes a thin layer inside a cold cylinder and an auger scrapes it up and presses it through a head, so a worn auger bearing, a gearmotor, or scale inside the cylinder shows up as noise, a slower output or wet, loose ice.

### What about my ice machine helps the technician most?

Which kind it is (modular on a bin, undercounter, nugget or dispenser), the make, roughly its age, whether it is air-, water- or remote-cooled, how much ice a day the place goes through and when it was last cleaned and sanitized. With those facts the van gets packed for your machine and the time slot is sized to fit.
