What Solana Beach does
to an ice machine.

Before incorporation the county allowed large condominium buildings on the sandstone bluffs, and the city has since dealt with bluffs collapsing onto the beach.

La Colonia de Eden Gardens, one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, grew up in the 1920s around Mexican farmers working on Rancho Santa Fe's big ranches.

In 2003 it became the first city in the continental United States to ban smoking on its public beaches.

On the water

After a hurricane the power may stay off for days, and ice in a bin that sat warm and then refroze is thrown out, the bin washed and sanitized, and the machine checked for storm water in its base before it makes ice for drinks again.

Seasonal houses

Owners closing a house for the season are best served by a machine that has been switched off, drained and left with its door propped open, since a sealed bin in a humid, empty house is exactly where mold takes hold.

Small cafes and back bars

Behind a narrow bar the undercounter ice machine is boxed in by coolers and a sink, and an air-cooled unit forced to breathe its own warm exhaust runs long cycles and drops thin cubes, so the clearance at its front grille is checked before the sealed system.

When an ice machine
cannot wait in Solana Beach.

In Solana Beach as anywhere, these four call for the ice machine to be shut down and left that way for our visit: water spreading from it or its drain across a walkway or toward an outlet, a burning or hot electrical smell, a breaker that trips when it starts, or a hiss or gas smell at a machine charged with flammable R-290.
