What we do

Ice machine
repair,
job by job.

Ten repairs we take on. Every job on this list gets a page to itself: the part the technician actually replaces, how the job compares with the rest of the list, and when an older machine no longer justifies the part.

The work itself

In the order it gets done: the cheapest cause first, and the expensive answer at the bottom where it usually belongs.

A technician in a plain gray work shirt stands beside a stainless modular ice machine on its ice bin in a restaurant back-of-house, holding a small notepad and looking at a handful of clear square ice cubes in a plain stainless scoop, the ice bin door open behind the scoop, the ice machine's front panel in place. Diagnostic fee

Ice machine diagnostic visit

A visit that watches a freeze and a harvest, checks water, drain and condenser, reads stored codes, and names the part holding the ice back.

The open front of a stainless modular ice machine in a restaurant back-of-house, its clear water curtain and a white plastic distribution tube laid out on a stainless work table beside a spray bottle and a soft nylon brush, the ice machine's evaporator plate clean and bright. Cost: lowest

Ice machine cleaning and sanitizing

Scale off the evaporator and distribution tube, slime out of the bin, curtain and drain, with the maker's cleaner and sanitizer on its schedule.

A close view of the lower back corner of a stainless ice machine in a restaurant back-of-house, a braided water line running from a quarter-turn shutoff valve through a plain white filter cartridge on the wall into the ice machine, clear ice cubes in a stainless bin in soft focus nearby. Cost: low to moderate

Ice machine water valve and filter repair

The inlet valve, filter, sump float or level probe and supply line, tested and replaced when water arrives short, dirty or nonstop.

The open front of a stainless ice machine head in a restaurant back-of-house, a full sheet of clear square ice cubes sliding off the ice machine's evaporator plate behind a hinged clear water curtain and falling into the ice bin below, close view. Cost: low to moderate

Ice machine harvest repair

The hot gas valve, harvest assist, curtain switch and thickness probe that decide when a sheet of cubes is done and make it drop.

A stainless ice machine head on its ice bin in a restaurant back-of-house with its side panel removed to show the compressor, neat copper tubing and a small condenser coil inside the ice machine, a plain brown parts box on the floor beside it. Cost: highest

Ice machine compressor and sealed system repair

The compressor, its start parts and the sealed system, including machines on flammable R-290, tested for pressure and leaks and repaired by the maker's procedure.

The lower front of a stainless air-cooled ice machine in a hotel bar back room with its louvered grille lifted away to show a finned condenser coil and a round fan blade behind a plain gray washable air filter, clear ice cubes in the ice machine's bin visible through the open bin door above. Cost: low to moderate

Ice machine condenser and fan repair

Air-cooled coils, fan motors and filters, water-cooled regulating valves and rooftop remote condensers, cleaned or repaired so the ice machine can shed its heat.

The open control box of a stainless ice machine in a restaurant back-of-house showing a green circuit board with a small blank display and neat wiring plugs, the ice machine's front panel leaning against the bin below, a multimeter lying on a folded cloth beside it and no hands touching the board. Cost: moderate to highest

Ice machine control board repair

The controller, its display, the sensors it reads and their wiring, tested when a code, a blinking light or a dead machine points there.

A low view behind a stainless undercounter ice machine in a hotel bar, a clear drain hose running from the ice machine down to a floor sink with an open air gap above its grate, a small plain white drain pump box beside the ice machine, a few drops of water on dry tile. Cost: low to moderate

Ice machine drain and pump repair

Gravity drains, air gaps, drain pumps and their lines, cleared or replaced when meltwater backs up into the bin or reaches the floor.

Looking down into an open stainless ice bin under a modular ice machine head, the ice bin heaped almost to the top with clear square ice cubes, a thin coiled thermostat bulb clipped to the bin wall just above the ice, a plain stainless scoop in its holder, the underside of the ice machine visible above. Cost: low

Ice machine bin control repair

The thermostat bulb, paddle, curtain switch or electronic eye that senses a full bin, adjusted or replaced so the machine stops and restarts on time.

A stainless countertop ice and water dispenser in an office break room with its front cover set aside to show the agitator wheel inside a hopper of small clear nugget ice, a plain paper cup on the drip tray grate under the ice machine's spout. Cost: low to moderate

Ice dispenser mechanism repair

The agitator, chute gate, lever, button or touchless sensor and drip tray that hand out ice and water, repaired when a dispenser stalls or drips.

What each of these usually costs

Bands rather than prices, because nobody can quote a figure before the ice machine has been looked at — and the diagnostic visit that decides it, set against the repair.

What a repair
usually costs.

Weigh the repair against what a new ice machine of the same kind would really cost you, delivered, set on its bin or into its opening, plumbed, drained and wired, not only its catalog price. A head sits on a bin that fits it, an undercounter unit fills an opening built for its size, and a remote-cooled machine has line sets and a roof condenser already in place, which tips most jobs toward repair. Cleaning, valves, probes, fan motors, drain parts and a bin control are small beside a new machine, and a board or a harvest part is usually still worth it. The real exception is a compressor or an evaporator on an old machine charged with a gas no longer made: there the technician lays both totals side by side and the choice is yours.

Read the full cost guide
RepairRelative costNotes
Full cleaning and sanitizing, condenser filter wash and a fresh water filter lowest A scheduled cleaning of a head on a bin or an undercounter unit, with the curtain, tube and probe cleaned by hand, is the smallest job here. Heavy scale that needs a second pass, a large bin, or slime deep in the drain lines adds time to it.
Inlet valve, sump float or level probe, supply line and filter head low to moderate A cleaned inlet screen or a new filter cartridge sits at the bottom of the band. A new inlet valve, a level probe, or a supply line and filter head replaced together make up the fuller job.
Thickness probe, curtain switch, harvest assist and hot gas valve low to moderate Cleaning and setting the probe, or a new curtain switch, costs little beyond the visit. A harvest assist motor is a step up, and a hot gas valve whose body has to be replaced inside the sealed system sits at the top of the band.
Compressor start parts, leak repair, evaporator or compressor replacement highest A start relay, capacitor or overload is a small part at the low end. Finding and repairing a leak with a new charge, or replacing a compressor or an evaporator, is the dearest work on any ice machine, and an R-290 machine adds the time its safe handling calls for.
Condenser cleaning, fan motor, water regulating valve or remote condenser work low to moderate A coil cleaning and a washed filter are near the bottom. A new fan motor or a water regulating valve is a step higher, and work on a remote condenser on the roof adds the time it takes to reach it.
Control board, display, transformer, thermistors and harness moderate to highest A loose or wet plug, a thermistor or a transformer that made the board look guilty is modest. A new control board with its display, set up for the model, is among the dearest parts in the machine, and some take time to arrive.
Drain line clearing, air gap, drain pump, float and check valve low to moderate Flushing and sanitizing a slimed drain line, or restoring its slope and air gap, is the lighter end. A new drain pump with its float and check valve, fitted behind an undercounter unit, sits a step higher.
Bin thermostat, paddle, curtain switch or ice-level sensor low Cleaning and adjusting the control is a short job, and a new thermostat or paddle switch is an inexpensive part. An electronic level sensor, or a control that has to be relocated after a head moved to a new bin, adds a little.
Agitator motor, dispense wheel, chute gate, solenoid, lever switch or sensor low to moderate Freeing fused ice and clearing a sticky gate or a clogged tray drain costs little beyond the visit. A new agitator gear motor or a touchless sensor assembly, with the hopper cleaned and sanitized afterward, moves the job up a step.

Start from what you noticed

Most people arrive knowing the symptom, not the repair. These are the jobs each one usually turns out to be, cheapest first — and every one of them starts with the ice machine diagnostic visit.

Questions about
the work.

I only know the ice is wrong. Which ice machine service should I pick?
Choose the diagnostic visit and describe what the bin, the cubes, the drain or the lights are doing. Working out which job on this page it turns into is on us, after the machine has run a cycle, and no quote or order comes before then.
The ice machine has two problems at once. Does one visit handle both?
Usually, and inside an ice machine one failure tends to cause the next: scale on the evaporator slows the harvest until the machine runs long and trips a code, and a dirty condenser makes the compressor work hot until it trips the breaker. You get a figure for each fix on its own and can approve one, both or neither.
Where are the costs of these ice machine repairs shown?
A water filter on an undercounter unit and an inlet valve on a modular head over a tall bin are both small parts with very different work around them. Our cost page sorts that work from light to heavy, and the diagnosis shows where your job sits on it.
Does the technician bring ice machine parts, or come back later?
Water filters, inlet valves, curtain switches, common probes and drain pump parts often travel in the van, and a model and serial in the booking raise the odds further. Model-specific pieces, like a board, an evaporator, a fan motor or a compressor, are sourced once the machine is diagnosed, and a second visit puts them in.
