Is yours
a nugget?
A nugget ice machine does not make cubes at all. Water fills an upright cylinder, the evaporator, whose wall the cooling system keeps below freezing, and a thin layer of ice forms on the inside. A slowly turning auger scrapes that layer off, carries it upward and squeezes it through an extruding head, where it breaks into small, soft, porous pieces that keep a drink cold and are easy to chew. Because the machine makes ice continuously instead of in freeze and harvest cycles, the parts that matter most are the auger and its bearings, the gear motor that turns it, the shaft seal where the auger leaves the cylinder, and the float reservoir that holds water in the cylinder at the right level. Hospitals and clinics favor this ice for patients, offices and cafeterias for drinks, and some large homes have a built-in version under the counter. Nugget machines come as heads on a bin, as undercounter units and on top of dispensers, and all of them are sensitive to scale, which grinds away at the auger and the cylinder wall.
What fails on a nugget ice machine
How to tell
The ice comes out as small, soft, uneven pellets you can crunch, not as square or crescent cubes.
It gives a steady low hum while it runs, rather than going quiet, then letting out a whoosh and a clatter as a sheet of cubes drops.
No plate of cubes sits behind a curtain; the front panel hides a narrow upright cylinder with a gear motor at its base.
Water feeds a small float reservoir before the cylinder, and the ice leaves through a chute near the top of the ice machine.

What fails
on this design.
On a nugget ice machine: auger bearings and the extruding head, gear motor and its overload, shaft seal at the base of the cylinder, float reservoir and inlet valve.
The problems it showsAuger bearings and the extruding head
Scale and plain wear loosen the bearings that keep the auger centered. The machine grows louder, the nuggets come out wet and mushy, and in the end the auger rubs the cylinder wall, which regular descaling is meant to prevent.
Gear motor and its overload
The gear motor pushes against ice every minute the machine runs. A worn gearbox leaks oil or grinds, and a motor forced against scale trips its overload, so the machine stops and restarts in fits.
Shaft seal at the base of the cylinder
A seal where the auger shaft leaves the cylinder keeps water out of the gearbox. Once it wears, water drips from under the machine and the gear motor bearings follow soon after, so the two are checked together.
Float reservoir and inlet valve
The float keeps the cylinder filled to the right height. A float stuck low or a valve that will not close floods the reservoir into the drain; one that will not open lets the cylinder run dry and can lock the auger in place.
Getting at it,
and whether to.
Most nugget machines are serviced from the front and the top, so the space above a head or a dispenser needs to be clear for the visit.
What repairs costOn the visit
- The auger, cylinder and gear motor come out as a heavy assembly with the power disconnected and the sealed system left closed; that part of the job is the technician's.
- If the ice machine stopped with a grinding or squealing noise, leave it off instead of restarting it again and again, because a jammed auger can strip its gearbox.
- In a clinic or a food service room, tell us about any sanitation or infection-control steps for the space, so the technician arrives ready for them.
Repair or replace
A nugget ice machine is usually worth repairing: bearings, a seal, a float and a gear motor are the parts that wear, and they are made to be replaced. A cylinder scored by a dry bearing is the costlier case, since the evaporator belongs to the sealed system. On an older unit where the evaporator and the compressor both need work, the technician weighs that against a new machine of the same output before anything is ordered.
