What the ice machine diagnostic visit
involves.
An ice machine diagnostic visit begins with the ice itself. The technician asks what changed and when, looks at the cubes or nuggets in the bin for size, clarity and shape, and notes how full the bin is. Then the machine is watched through at least one freeze and one harvest: how long the plate takes to build a full sheet, whether the water curtain swings and the thickness probe calls the harvest, whether the slab drops cleanly, and whether the bin control stops production when it should. The water side comes next, with the supply shutoff, the filter's date, the inlet valve and the sump level, followed by the condenser with its fan or its water valve, and the drain from the bin to the floor drain and its air gap. Most current controllers keep a history of codes and cycle times, and reading it saves guesswork. Only with the power off at the disconnect are panels opened to measure the pump, the valves, the board and the compressor's electrical parts. By the end of the visit the failed part has a name, the repair has a description and the job has a figure.

Name the part that stopped the ice with its price, say plainly whether this machine is worth it, and leave it making ice if the fix is on the truck.
Hear what the ice machine does and since when, and look at the ice in the bin for size, clarity and quantity.
Watch at least one freeze and one harvest, timing the cycle and checking the curtain, the thickness probe and the slab's release.
Check the supply, the filter, the inlet valve and the sump, then the condenser with its fan or water valve, then the drain and its air gap.
Read the controller's code history and, with the power off at the disconnect, open the panels to test the pump, the valves, the board and the compressor's start parts.

- Which kind it is: a head on a bin or a dispenser, an undercounter unit, a nugget machine, or a countertop ice and water dispenser
- What it does now: no ice, little ice, small or cloudy cubes, a leak, water that never stops running, a noise, a smell, or a code
- The code or blinking light on the controller, and whether a cleaning, a new filter or a power outage came just before
- The maker, model and serial number from the data plate, usually on the back or visible through the bin door

These steps compare ice machine jobs with one another; they are not a quote for your machine. A head that makes little ice could have scale on its plate, a clogged condenser, a slow inlet valve, a sticking hot gas valve or a compressor losing its strength, and no one can tell those apart over the phone. The machine is run through a freeze and a harvest, its code history read and its parts measured with the power off before any figure is given. The price comes before any tool touches the repair, and going ahead is your call alone.

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the ice machine diagnostic visit goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
A Tampa Bay diagnostic visit to a bayside restaurant or a St. Petersburg bar starts with the conditions the ice machine works in, the air at its condenser on a steamy afternoon and the water reaching its inlet, then reads its error history before any part is named.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
Orlando hotels and resort restaurants lean on their ice machines around the clock, so the diagnostic visit is timed between breakfast and lunch service, follows one full freeze and harvest, and weighs how much ice the machine really makes against what the kitchen needs.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
In Miami and along the beaches the visit often begins on a roof, where the remote condenser of a hotel or a tower restaurant bakes in sun and salt air, then comes down to the head and the bin to watch one complete cycle.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
A New York diagnostic visit is planned around a restaurant's delivery hours and a basement kept behind stairs or a sidewalk hatch; the technician checks the ice machine where it stands, times a cycle, and reports what failed and what the repair takes.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
Houston heat pushes an air-cooled ice machine hard for most of the year, so a diagnostic visit to a bar, a clinic or an office pantry records the room and condenser temperatures first, then the cycle times, before blaming the sealed system or any part.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
In Chicagoland the same ice machine faces a sticky July and a January in which its rooftop condenser sits in snow, so the diagnostic visit asks when the trouble began, checks the remote line and head pressure, and then follows a full freeze cycle.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
Los Angeles restaurants, studios and home bars book a diagnostic visit when output drops in a Valley heat wave or after a quake nudges a head on its bin; the technician checks how the machine sits, how it breathes and how it cycles before quoting.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
San Diego ice machines range from Gaslamp bars and harbor hotels to taprooms inland, and the diagnostic visit weighs damp marine air near the coast or dry heat farther east against what the machine shows during one full cycle.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
Bay Area offices with shared kitchens often run a nugget ice machine all day, while restaurants from the city to the Peninsula run modular heads; the diagnostic visit reads the error log, watches a cycle and checks the water supply before naming the problem.
