What the ice machine water valve and filter repair
involves.
Every cube starts with water arriving at the right pressure, clean enough and in the right amount. The water side of an ice machine begins at a shutoff valve and a filter cartridge on the wall, then a supply line to the inlet valve, an electric solenoid that opens when the controller calls for a fill. On a cube machine the water goes into a sump, where a float or a level probe tells the controller it is full, and the pump carries it up to the distribution tube; a nugget machine keeps its level with a float reservoir beside the cylinder. A water-cooled machine also has a second supply feeding its condenser. When the filter clogs, the valve's screen scales over or the pressure sags, the sump fills slowly, cycles run long and cubes come out small. When the valve cannot close, water runs into the sump and down the drain without stopping, and over a month that can cost more than the ice is worth. The technician measures pressure and flow at the valve, checks its coil and screen, tests the level sensor, and looks for leaks at every fitting from the wall to the sump.
How the visit goesWhat it usually costsLow to moderate · Inlet valve, sump float or level probe, supply line and filter head
A cleaned inlet screen or a new filter cartridge sits at the bottom of the band. A new inlet valve, a level probe, or a supply line and filter head replaced together make up the fuller job.

Ice machine water valve and filter repair,
step by step.
Run a full cycle, confirm the fill stops cleanly and the cubes are back to full size, and write down the date for the next filter.
Close and reopen the supply, note the filter's date, and check the water pressure where the line enters the ice machine.
Watch a fill: how quickly the sump fills, whether the valve shuts on time, and whether the float or level probe reads true.
With the power off, test the inlet valve's coil, clean or replace its inlet screen, and look at every fitting for a drip.
Replace what has failed: the valve, the float or probe, a kinked or aging supply line, or the filter cartridge and its head.
Run a full cycle, confirm the fill stops cleanly and the cubes are back to full size, and write down the date for the next filter.

- Whether water keeps running when the ice machine is idle, or the machine seems starved for water
- When the filter was last changed, and whether there is a softener or other treatment on the supply
- Any plumbing work, a water main repair or a new filter just before the trouble started
- Whether the machine is air-cooled or water-cooled, if you know

The kitchen, the climate and the building all change how the ice machine water valve and filter repair goes. These notes are about that, metro by metro.
All service areasTampa BayFL · 31 areas
Tampa Bay restaurants often run their ice machines behind a filter sized for the whole bar, and when it clogs in the busy season the inlet valve starves and the cubes come out small; the visit checks pressure, the filter and the valve, in that order.
OrlandoFL · 30 areas
Resort kitchens around Orlando may feed several ice machines from one water branch, so a filter or a valve problem on one can look like a problem on all of them; the visit measures flow at each machine's inlet before any valve is changed.
Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas
In a Miami tower restaurant the water reaching an ice machine has climbed many floors through booster pumps, and a pressure swing can make an inlet valve chatter or let water seep past it; the visit tests the valve and the filter against the building's supply.
New York MetroNY · 75 areas
In New York a restaurant's ice machine often shares its supply with a busy dish area and a bar sink, and when they all draw at once the trough fills short; the visit checks the supply pressure during service, then the inlet valve and the filter.
HoustonTX · 36 areas
Houston's storms and flooding can disturb the water mains, and after a boil-water notice an ice machine's filter is replaced and the machine cleaned and sanitized before its ice is used; a valve that sticks after the outage is tested on the same visit.
ChicagoIL · 50 areas
A Chicagoland ice machine in an unheated storeroom or a garage bar can freeze its inlet valve during a cold snap, and the cracked valve body leaks once the room warms, so winter calls here often end with a new valve and a line kept above freezing.
Los AngelesCA · 95 areas
In Los Angeles a flexible supply line lets an ice machine shift a little in an earthquake without tearing its connection, and a visit for a slow fill or a leak checks that line, the inline filter and the inlet valve together.
San DiegoCA · 31 areas
San Diego restaurants and home bars often pair an ice machine with a scale-inhibiting filter, and a cartridge left past its change date slows the fill until the cubes thin out; the visit changes the cartridge and checks the valve that feeds the trough.
San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas
Bay Area offices change a nugget ice machine's water filter on a facilities calendar that sometimes slips, and a clogged cartridge starves the machine until it stops or shows a water error; the visit replaces the filter and tests the valve's flow.
