Ice Machine Leaking Water Across the Floor or Under the Bin

An ice machine leaking water leaves a wet patch spreading from under the storage bin behind a bar, a dark stain creeping out beneath an undercounter unit, or a steady run down the side of a head sitting on its bin in a back room.

Gas smell? Everyone out, no switches. No gas: close the water, breaker off at a dry panel

On a wet floor the order is: power, then water, then the mop. Cut the circuit from a dry panel, close the supply valve and keep staff out of the puddle. Melt from a bin door left open can wait for an ordinary booking once the door is shut; a leak that comes back with the supply open, or anything from the drain or the pump, needs a visit this week.

What it
usually means.

An ice machine is plumbed at both ends. Water comes in through a supply line, a filter cartridge and an inlet valve, fills a sump, is pumped over the evaporator by the distribution tube, and whatever does not freeze leaves by gravity or through a small drain pump, along with the meltwater from the bin. Every one of those joints can drip, and a bin sheds melt all day, so a floor under a machine that is never quite dry is common in a busy bar. The worrying leaks are the ones that grow: a drain line that has slipped off its fitting, a pump that stopped lifting, a cracked filter head, a water curtain knocked out of place so water sprays past the sump, or a floor drain that backs up every time the bin empties. Water on a tiled floor is a slip risk for staff carrying glassware; water that reaches a wall outlet, an extension lead or the machine's own cord is an electrical danger. Stay out of the wet area, switch the circuit off only from a dry panel, and close the supply valve on the water line so the machine stops refilling.

Answer these first

01

Where does the water first appear: under the bin, under the head, behind the unit at the wall, or at a floor drain nearby?

02

Is the water cold and clean, or cloudy and slimy like the inside of the bin?

03

Does the leak grow during a harvest, while the machine is filling, or only when the bin is emptied or cleaned?

04

Does the machine drain by gravity to a floor drain, or does it have a small pump pushing water up to a sink or standpipe?

05

Is any of the water near a wall outlet, a power strip, the cord or a floor box?

Ice machine leaking water: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

If water is near an outlet, a power strip or the cord, keep everyone out of it and switch the machine's circuit off only from a dry spot at the panel.

02

Close the water supply valve on the line that feeds the machine, usually on the wall behind it or under the nearest sink.

03

Put a wet-floor sign or a mat down so staff carrying ice or glassware do not slip.

Also worth checking

  • Once the power is off and the floor is dry, look behind the unit for a hose off its fitting or a pump reservoir that is brimming, without opening any panel.
  • Photograph the wet area and the data plate with the model and serial number for the technician.

6 things ice machine leaking water across the floor or under the bin turns out to be, from meltwater from a bin that was overfilled or propped open to an inlet valve that will not close fully.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

Meltwater from a bin that was overfilled or propped open

A bin door left open during a rush, or ice heaped above the rim by hand, melts over the edge instead of down the bin drain. Closing the door and keeping ice below the rim stops the puddle.

  2. 02 lowest

A drain hose off its fitting or kinked behind the unit

Undercounter units are pushed back hard against the wall after cleaning, which folds or pulls the drain hose. Water then backs up and spills at the first joint that gives.

  3. 03 low to moderate

A drain pump that no longer lifts

Where no floor drain is close, a small pump lifts the water to a sink or standpipe. Slime in its reservoir or a worn float lets it overflow onto the floor.

  4. 04 low to moderate

A cracked filter head or a loose supply fitting

The filter housing on the wall takes full line pressure all day. A cartridge swapped in a hurry, or a fitting that was never tightened, weeps under pressure and runs down to the floor.

  5. 05 low

Water curtain or distribution tube out of place

On a modular head the curtain hangs in front of the evaporator and turns falling water back into the sump. A curtain left off after cleaning, or a tube clogged at one end, sprays water where it does not belong.

  6. 06 moderate

An inlet valve that will not close fully

Scale on the valve seat keeps it open a crack, so the sump overfills and the surplus finds a way out. The valve is replaced and the line pressure checked on a visit.

Questions about
ice machine leaking water across the floor or under the bin.

Is a little water under the ice bin every day normal?
A few drops at the bin drain fitting can be, since the bin melts all day. A patch that spreads, or a floor that is wet away from the drain, points at a hose, a pump or the sump.
Why does the ice machine leak mostly during a harvest?
Harvest dumps water from the sump and meltwater off the plate at once. A drain that is half blocked or a curtain out of place shows up in exactly those minutes.
Can the ice machine keep running while we mop behind the bar?
Not if the water has reached an outlet, a cord or a floor box. Switch the circuit off from a dry panel and close the supply valve until the source is found.
Does a leaking drain pump mean a new ice machine?
No. The pump is a separate part fitted beside or under the unit, and a stuck float or a slimy reservoir is often all that is wrong with it.
