What Cleaning Needed
actually means.
Minerals rejected while the slab freezes slowly form a hard scale in the water system, and KitchenAid lights Cleaning Needed when a cleaning is due. The guide asks for a cleaning when the light comes on, after 9 months, or earlier if production drops noticeably; very hard water shortens that interval.

What to do when Cleaning Needed shows on the ice machineKind of codeMode, not a failure
Nothing is broken; the control is reporting a state someone chose or a routine it runs: a clean or sanitize reminder counting the hours since the last cycle, a delay of a few minutes after power returns before the pump and compressor start, a bin-full light while the bin control is satisfied, or a standby or off mode someone chose at the keypad. No part is needed; finishing the cycle the light asks for, waiting out the delay or the key sequence from the manual ends it.

An ice machine error code may show as a number on a small display, a pattern of blinking lights on the control board, a colored light on the front, or a machine that stops with one indicator flashing.

Before you book,
in this order.
Each step comes from KitchenAid's own guidance for Cleaning Needed on its ice machines. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.
Turn the machine off, wait 5 to 10 minutes for the last slab to drop, and empty the bin.
Drain the water pan through its cap, then follow the guide: one 16-ounce bottle of approved ice machine cleaner and two bottles of tap water into the pan, then press Clean.
Clean the air-cooled condenser as well, since KitchenAid ties a dirty condenser to low output and high running temperatures.
If the light stays on after a completed cycle, or the cycle will not start, book a visit.
Cleared?
The light or code is gone, and the machine fills, freezes and drops a full batch of cubes into the bin with no new part. If it returns within a week, or the clean light comes back straight after a cleaning cycle, mention that in the booking.
What not to do
The light does not stop the machine; ice keeps coming until you start the cycle. It is also different from a blinking Clean button, which means a cleaning cycle is already running.
