Ice Machine Error Code or Flashing Light: What It Is Telling You

An ice machine error code may show as a number on a small display, a pattern of blinking lights on the control board, a colored light on the front, or a machine that stops with one indicator flashing.

What it
usually means.

Behind every ice machine code is a timer or a reading. The board expects the sump to fill within a set number of seconds, the freeze to end before a limit, the slab to drop and swing the curtain before harvest runs out, the discharge line and the condenser to stay within their temperatures, the bin control to report, and the supply voltage to stay steady. When one of those is missed, the board records it, shows a number or a light pattern, and on some machines locks itself out until someone resets it. Many of the signals are states rather than failures: the clean cycle in progress, the wait after a power cut, a full bin, standby. Manitowoc, Scotsman, Hoshizaki and Ice-O-Matic each write their own tables, and some older boards speak only in blinking lights, so the same pattern can mean two things on two machines and the model number settles it. Our code pages sort each make's signals into eight families: modes, water supply, the harvest and freeze cycle, the cooling system, the condenser and airflow, the drain and pump, the sensors and bin control, and the control board and power. Reading a code never means taking off a panel or touching the tubing.

Answer these first

01

What exactly does the machine show: a number, a light pattern, a color, and does it flash?

02

Did it appear at start-up, during a freeze, at harvest, or after a cleaning?

03

Does the machine still make ice, or has it stopped?

04

After switching it off at its selector and back on, does the code return, and after how long?

05

What is the model and serial number on the data plate?

Ice machine error code: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.

01

Write down the number, or count the blinks and note the color, before anything is reset.

02

If the machine is in its clean cycle or waiting after a power cut, let that finish and see whether the signal goes on its own.

03

Find your make and the number on our code pages, or in the service section of the manual for that model.

Also worth checking

  • Turn the selector off for a minute and back to ice, then time how long the signal takes to come back.
  • Keep the front panel and the control box closed; the part a code points at is tested on the visit.

How soon does it need a visit?

Most codes can wait for a booking at an ordinary pace. A puddle near power, a hot smell, a breaker that will not hold, or a hiss or gas smell near the machine comes before any code: follow that page, then call.

7 things ice machine error code or flashing light: what it is telling you turns out to be, from a mode or a reminder to control board, power and cooling system.

The cost guide
  1. 01 no repair

    A mode or a reminder

Clean cycle, a start delay, bin full and standby show their own signals. The manual shows each and how to finish it.

  2. 02 lowest

    Water supply

A sump that does not fill in time, from a closed valve, a clogged filter or low pressure, sets a water code.

  3. 03 low to moderate

    Harvest and freeze cycle

A freeze that runs too long or a harvest that never ends sets a cycle code, often from scale or a harvest part.

  4. 04 low

    Condenser and airflow

A condenser that runs too hot, from dirt, a dead fan or a hot room, sets a temperature or pressure code.

  5. 05 low to moderate

    Sensors and bin control

A bin control or thermistor out of range sets its own code and may leave the bin full or empty.

  6. 06 low to moderate

    Drain and pump

A pump or drain that cannot keep up sets a drain code on machines that watch it.

  7. 07 moderate to highest

Control board, power and cooling system

A board that fails its self-check, a voltage out of range, or a compressor that does not start set codes of their own.

Questions about
ice machine error code or flashing light: what it is telling you.

Our ice machine shows a blinking light but still drops ice. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. A blink can mean a clean reminder, a full bin or a delay. If ice keeps coming and nothing leaks or smells, look it up and book at an ordinary pace.
We reset the ice machine and the code was back by the next harvest. What now?
The reset only cleared the display. The step that failed, often a fill or a harvest that ran out of time, failed again and needs a technician to test it.
Is it safe to leave an ice machine locked out on a code overnight?
Yes, a machine that has stopped itself on a code is safe to leave off at its selector. Empty the bin if the ice will sit for long.
Our Manitowoc and our Scotsman show different signals for the same harvest problem. Why?
Each maker writes its own table and light patterns, so there is no common list. The model number on the data plate decides what a signal means.
