KitchenAid ice machines,
specifically.

KitchenAid sells clear-ice undercounter ice machines in 15-inch and 18-inch widths, in stainless, black stainless and panel-ready versions, and one 18-inch model rated for a patio. Each freezes water into a thin slab on a chilled plate and drops it onto a wire grid that slices it into cubes, so most KitchenAid visits come down to that plate, the grid, the water pan and the drain path.

KitchenAid builds 1 of the 4 ice machine types this site covers. Which one decides how the visit is planned.

All ice machine types

What is particular
to KitchenAid.

We service the 15-inch KUIX models (gravity drain, built-in pump and overlay-panel versions), the 18-inch KUID models with a 35-pound bin, and the 18-inch KUIO outdoor model. All of them are self-contained clear-ice machines; KitchenAid does not list a nugget machine, a modular head or a dispenser in the US.

The cutter grid has its own plug

The grid that slices the slab is wired to the machine through a harness connector. KitchenAid lists a loose grid or an unplugged harness among the reasons for weak production, so a slab sitting whole on the grid is checked there before anything deeper.

A model built for the outdoors

The 18-inch KUIO338HSS is sold as UL approved for outdoor use, with welded stainless construction and a 35-pound bin. An outdoor unit sees heat, pollen and winter shutdowns that an indoor one never does, so its condenser and its drain get more of our attention.

Pump or gravity, depending on the model

Some 15-inch models, such as the KUIX535HPA, carry a built-in drain pump, while others drain by gravity and take an add-on pump kit, part 1901A, when no floor drain is close. Knowing which one you have tells us whether a wet bin points to the pump or to the slope of the drain line.

Max Ice is on from the first day

KitchenAid switches Max Ice on automatically when the machine is first powered and drops it after 24 hours. The indicator can also be pressed on for a party, which speeds production for a day; it is a setting, not a warning.

Parts

KitchenAid names filter F2WC9I1 for these machines and a single drain pump kit, 1901A, for gravity models. Evaporator plates, circulating pumps and control boards are ordered by the model and serial numbers printed inside the cabinet, so we read those before ordering.

Repair or replace

A water valve, a filter housing, a circulating pump, a cutter grid or a drain pump is usually worth fixing on a KitchenAid that still freezes a full slab. When the sealed system has leaked on an older unit and the board is failing as well, it is fair to weigh that repair against a new machine, especially on a panel-ready unit whose door panel can be moved over.

Questions about
KitchenAid ice machines.

Why is my KitchenAid ice machine making thin cubes after a filter change?
KitchenAid ties thin or missing ice to a filter that is not turned fully to its locked position, a cracked filter, or missing O-rings. Seat the filter again until the arrow lines up with the lock symbol, and if the cubes stay thin for a day, book a visit.
Can a KitchenAid ice machine stand where there is no floor drain?
Yes, if it has a drain pump. Some 15-inch models have one built in, and gravity models accept KitchenAid's pump kit 1901A; without a pump, the machine needs a floor drain below it.
Is it normal for water to spill over inside my KitchenAid ice machine?
Some overflow from the water pan is part of how the machine flushes rejected minerals. A whooshing sound with no ice, though, points to a supply that is off or a drain cap that has worked loose.
Will my KitchenAid ice machine keep working in a cold garage?
Not reliably. KitchenAid asks for a room above 45°F; below that the bin sensor can read the cold room as a full bin and stop production.
