What is particular
to U-Line.

We service U-Line 1 Class clear, craft clear, crescent and nugget machines, the 3000 Series 18-inch clear model with its text menu, and the Outdoor and ADA versions. The nugget machines use lamp patterns rather than a numeric display, so the model family changes how a visit starts.

Clear cubes grown on a slab

The clear-ice models freeze 32 cubes at a time on a 4 x 8 slab, and a normal cycle at the default thickness setting runs about 15 to 20 minutes. When a slab refuses to drop or cubes come out thick and fused, the evaporator, the water flow over it and the hot gas valve are the first things we look at.

The nugget line works with an auger

On the nugget machines the water freezes inside a drum and a turning auger pushes the ice up and out, while a drain valve flushes away mineral-laden water from time to time. That makes the drain valve and the water level sensor as important on a nugget visit as the compressor is on a cube visit.

Most errors stay in a hidden log

On the clear-ice control, U-Line logs sensor and pump errors in a service menu and shows only the door message on the display. We read that log on arrival, so a machine that simply stopped making ice with a blank display still tells us which thermistor or pump circuit tripped.

Gravity drain or factory pump

U-Line sells each clear model with a gravity drain or with a factory drain pump, and a model without the pump can only be installed over a gravity drain. Standing water in the bin on a gravity unit usually points at the drain run, while on a pump unit the pump circuit gets tested first.

Parts

U-Line lists its ice machine parts by model and revision, from the display module and hot gas valve to thermistors and the drain pump kit, so we read the model and serial from the cabinet plate before ordering.

Repair or replace

A thermistor, water valve, drain pump or hot gas valve is a routine repair on a U-Line that still freezes well. When the sealed system has failed on an older outdoor unit that has also lost its cabinet finish, it is worth weighing a replacement that fits the same opening.

My U-Line ice machine stopped making ice but the display shows nothing unusual. Where is the error?
On the clear-ice models only the door message reaches the screen. Other events, from a thermistor reading open to a drain pump circuit, go into an error log that a technician opens from the service menu, so book a visit if the machine stays idle with water and power present.
How often should a U-Line clear ice machine be cleaned?
U-Line gives the clear models an automatic clean alert and asks for a cleaning cycle every three months otherwise, sooner with hard water. It also asks for its own clear ice machine cleaner, since other products can damage the evaporator finish.
Can a U-Line ice machine go where there is no floor drain?
Yes, if it is a model with the factory drain pump, which lifts the water to a standpipe or sink tailpiece. A model without the pump needs a gravity drain below it with a steady drop and no traps.
Why does the ice from my U-Line nugget machine come out wet and slushy?
Nugget ice is compressed flake ice, so it is always softer than a cube, but very wet ice can mean low water flow, a scaled drum or a sensor problem. Running the cleaning cycle when the lamps ask for it is the first step, and a visit follows if the texture does not come back.
