Blue Air ice machines,
specifically.

Blue Air, a commercial refrigeration maker that sells in the US through its own site, offers cube-ice modular heads, a nugget-ice undercounter machine and a countertop nugget ice and water dispenser. Its current nugget models run on R-290 and carry a digital self-diagnostic system, so most visits start from a code on the panel or a blinking button.

The Blue Air lineup

What is particular
to Blue Air.

We service BLMI and current BLMD and BLMH modular heads, the BLUN-120A nugget undercounter machine and the BLDN-280A countertop ice and water dispenser. The nugget models use R-290, a flammable refrigerant.

Two different code sets

The BLMI modular heads show single-digit codes such as E1 and E5 on a seven-segment display. The BLDN-280A dispenser uses three-character codes such as E01 and E11 and repeats them with blinking Ice and Water buttons, and the meanings do not line up one to one.

Nugget ice from an auger

The BLUN-120A undercounter and BLDN-280A dispenser make individual nugget ice, which means a gear motor drives the ice out of a cylinder. The dispenser has a dedicated gear motor code, E03, and icing inside the cylinder is one of its listed causes.

Pump kit for sites without a floor drain

The BLUN-120A accepts an IMDP-120 pump kit that lifts drain water up to 23 feet. On those installations a drain complaint starts with the pump, not the machine.

Timed safeties on the modular heads

The BLMI heads allow 60 minutes for a freeze and 25 minutes for a harvest, give one second try, and then stop with a code and a beep. Knowing those limits tells us whether the machine is slow or truly stuck.

Parts

Blue Air posts spec sheets and owner's manuals per model on its site and runs its own warranty registration and claims. The newest modular heads (BLMD and BLMH) had only spec sheets online, so their board and parts are confirmed from the rating plate.

Repair or replace

Sensors, water valves, float or level switches and fan motors are worth replacing on any Blue Air machine. A gear motor on a nugget unit is also a normal repair; a compressor failure on an older head is where replacement gets weighed.

Questions about
Blue Air ice machines.

Is E1 on a Blue Air head the same as E01 on the dispenser?
They are close but not the same. E1 on a BLMI head means two freeze cycles each ran past 60 minutes, while E01 on the BLDN-280A means ice making ran past 30 minutes, with the Ice and Water buttons blinking together.
My Blue Air nugget dispenser shows E03. What stopped?
E03 is the gear motor error on the BLDN-280A, and the Water button blinks once a second. Blue Air lists a gear motor that is not running and ice forming inside the cylinder as causes, so book a visit rather than forcing the dispenser.
Can a Blue Air undercounter nugget machine go where there is no floor drain?
Yes, with the IMDP-120 pump kit, which Blue Air rates to lift drain water up to 23 feet.
Does my Blue Air nugget machine use a flammable refrigerant?
Yes. The BLUN-120A and BLDN-280A spec sheets list R-290, a hydrocarbon. A gas smell or hiss near one means leaving the room and booking a visit.
