What HI AMPS
actually means.

On Horizon Elite and Maestro Plus boards, the control measures the current of the gearmotor that turns the auger. When the draw climbs past its limit, usually because ice is binding in a scaled evaporator, the machine stops, HI AMPS and TIME DELAY light, and it tries again after an hour. On Maestro Plus, a second HI AMPS inside that hour turns into a lockout with only the HI AMP light on, cleared by the reset button on the board.

What to do when HI AMPS shows on the ice machine

Before you book,
in this order.

Each step comes from Follett's own guidance for HI AMPS on its ice machines. Follow it to the end: the last card says whether this is a visit.

01

Write down which lights are on: HI AMPS with TIME DELAY, or HI AMP alone.

02

Leave the machine alone for the full hour; the board will attempt a normal restart by itself.

03

Look at where the machine drains and make sure water is leaving freely, since a slow drain is one of Follett's listed causes.

04

If HI AMPS comes back the same day, or the HI AMP light stays on by itself, book a visit for descaling and an auger and gearmotor check.

It usually turns into ice machine harvest repair. Book with the code and the model number.

What not to do

HI AMPS is not an electrical supply problem in the building, and resetting the breaker does nothing for it. It is also different from HI PRESSURE, which points at the condenser rather than the auger.

Every code on this site is taken from the manufacturer's documentation, never from a forum or a parts listing. Horizon Elite D710A and related heads use a soft error with a 1-hour delay. Maestro Plus D414A, P414A and R414A (R290) boards also stop when the motor draws no current at all, and lock out on a second event within an hour.

Questions
about HI AMPS.

Can I clear HI AMPS myself?
Write down which lights are on: HI AMPS with TIME DELAY, or HI AMP alone. If it comes back, it needs a visit.
Why does HI AMPS keep coming back on my Follett ice machine?
Repeated HI AMPS usually means ice is dragging on the auger, most often from scale in the evaporator or water that is harder than the drain setting allows for. Descaling and a look at the auger bearings usually settle it.
Only the HI AMP light is on and my Maestro Plus will not restart. What now?
That is the lockout after a second HI AMPS within an hour. The board waits for its reset button, and since two events in a row point at a real mechanical load, book a visit before anyone resets it.
Will my Follett restart by itself after HI AMPS?
Yes, after the first event. The machine stays off for the one-hour time delay and then tries a normal start.

Still showing HI AMPS?

A booking with a code goes further when it carries the light or code copied as it appeared, the model and serial off the data plate, and a word on whether cubes still fall into the bin. With those three in hand, our office can match the probable part to your machine the same afternoon.
