Koolaire ice machines,
specifically.

KoolAire is the value line of Kube ice machines designed and built by Manitowoc Ice, sold as 22, 30 and 48 inch modular heads and compact undercounter units. The control is deliberately simple, a toggle switch and a few lights on the board, so a KoolAire visit leans more on reading those lights and the floats than on menus.

The Koolaire lineup

What is particular
to Koolaire.

We service KoolAire K, KP and KT Kube modular heads in 22, 30 and 48 inch widths, in air, water and remote versions, and KoolAire undercounter cube units. Some current KoolAire models run on R290, a flammable refrigerant, and the model code shows which.

A toggle switch, not a screen

KoolAire heads start, stop and clean from one toggle switch with ICE, OFF and CLEAN positions. Cycling that switch is also how the board shows which service limit stopped the machine.

Floats instead of probes

A harvest float switch and an ice thickness float in the trough tell the board when to harvest and when the fill is done. Floats coated with scale are one of the first things we check when the service lights flash.

Three limits on two lights

The board reports long freezes on SL#1, long harvests on SL#2 and a failed fill on both together. It remembers only the last limit and erases it after 100 normal harvests.

Tool-free food zone

KoolAire says the distribution tube, water tray, pump, water shield and floats come out without tools, and its cleaning takes 17 steps. That makes the six-month de-scale quicker than on many heads.

Parts

Floats, pumps, water valves and boards are matched to the model code on the serial plate. That code also shows whether a head uses R290 or R404A, which decides how any sealed-system work is done.

Repair or replace

A KoolAire head is built for a lower first cost, so a float, valve, pump or board is usually worth replacing, but a failed compressor on an older head is a real reason to compare repair with a new unit. Whether it is under its maker's coverage is worth checking first.

Questions about
Koolaire ice machines.

How do I find out why my KoolAire stopped?
Move the toggle switch to OFF and back to ICE, then watch the board. One flashing light is service limit 1 or 2; both flashing together is service limit 3, a water problem.
Is KoolAire made by Manitowoc?
Yes. KoolAire says its ice machines are designed and manufactured by Manitowoc Ice, but the controls and floats differ from Manitowoc's own Indigo heads.
How often should a KoolAire be cleaned?
KoolAire's handbook asks for a de-scale and sanitize every six months and for the condenser to be cleaned at least as often.
Why is the clean light flashing on my KoolAire at start-up?
At start-up it means the trough did not drain when the dump valve opened. Check the drain line before assuming a cleaning is due.
